Visit an Airship Base

Goodyear maintains three airship bases across the country that serve as the operational hubs for each of its current Blimps. Each base boasts a support staff of engineers, technicians, administrators and other crew members that ensure that the Blimp is in prime condition and always ready to soar above its next destination.

Wingfoot Lake - Ohio Base

Built in 1917, the hangar at Wingfoot Lake is the oldest airship facility and one of the oldest active aircraft bases in the world. In addition to a maintenance and construction facility for Goodyear's blimp fleet. In 2018, The Wingfoot Lake hangar was awarded an Ohio historical marker recognizing its contributions to Lighter-Than-Air aviation in general as well as its military significance during WWI & WWII. The very first class of airship pilots was trained at Wingfoot Lake.

We regret we are unable to accommodate individual public tours. Tours of the Wingfoot Lake facility are conducted on a pre-scheduled basis for organized groups such as schools, scouts and similar educational and community organizations.

The Wingfoot Lake base in Suffield, Ohio is near Akron, Ohio, home to the world headquarters for The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.

Carson - California Base

Goodyear's blimp base in Carson, California opened in January 1968 and covers 27 acres. It has been home to nine Goodyear blimps (with just five different names) since opening. They have been Columbia, Eagle, Spirit of America, Spirit of Innovation and currently Wingfoot Three, the new model of semi-rigid airship that replaced the GZ20 blimps. Located on a wedge of land where the San Diego (I405) and Harbor (I110) Freeways intersect, each day more than a million commuters drive past the base and can catch a glimpse of the Goodyear blimp, unless she is out and about traveling the country!
